Collaborative Art Project with The Center For Women & Gender Equity

🐟 The Starfish Story – A Community Art Experience

The Starfish Story is a participatory art installation created by artist Jessica Warren in collaboration with Sharon K. Sobotta, Director of the Center for Women & Gender Equity (CWGE), and students of Saint Mary’s College. Unveiled during the CWGE’s 25th anniversary Open House, the installation transforms the Center into an interactive canvas of creativity and purpose

The Starfish Story extends beyond a static piece—it’s a dynamic conversation starter that continues to foster empowerment and connection. Positioned in a high-traffic space, it remains a focal point for education, reflection, and engagement for future CWGE programs.

Changes at Studio 23

Some 2025-2026 events are on hold due to lack of funds.

Sad News: The annual Summer Art Fair and Maker Market & annual Blacklight Art Show will not be happening this year.

Good News: Right now Studio 23 is focused on smaller, community based, DEI related events. Like our Art of the African Diaspora Satellite Exhibit hosted by Eric Murphy and the Alameda Filipino Music & Art Fest Hosted by Grey Starr And DEI related art projects like our collaborative art project with The Center for Women & Gender Equity at St. Mary’s College.

We post event updates about two weeks to a month before they happen. Stay tuned for future DEI related events and projects!

Studio 23 and ArtPush will also be working on raising funds for future events in 2027. Visit ArtPush.org if you would like to make a donation.

Julia LaChica

Biography
Julia LaChica is a Japanese/Filipino multidisciplinary visual artist, designer, and educator based in Oakland, CA. Her practice encompasses storytelling through painting, printmaking, collage, and assemblage, exploring themes of identity and culture. In addition to her studio work, Julia leads printmaking workshops that foster creative expression and community building, using art as a powerful tool for dialogue, healing, and empowerment.

Artist Statement
My paintings and visual constructions reveal the multilayered ways personal memory, collective experience, and cultural history take on material form. In my work, I consciously create a sense of an intimate archive that reaches across time by integrating found objects, distressed elements, and aged materials. Through these processes, I aim to reveal how corrosion, rust, and wear accumulate on bodies and surfaces over time.
